Betty Jean Ely

Betty Stines, born on June 16, 1939, in Berry, Alabama, to Willis and Sibbie Stines, passed

away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-

grandmother, sister, and friend, Betty lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication to her

family and community.

In her early years, Betty moved to Chicago, where she worked in various roles, including in

factories and as a waitress, before transitioning into education. In the early 1970s, she began

working as a teacher’s aide for the Chicago Public School System, where she made a lasting

impact on the lives of many students. She continued in that role until her well-earned retirement

in 2004.

Betty was a long-time, dedicated member of the Kimball Avenue United Church of Christ, where

she found joy in singing, worshiping, and giving back to the community through charitable work.

For over 30 years, she contributed her time and energy to the church she held dear.

As the Matriarch of her family, Betty’s greatest legacy was her unwavering selflessness. She

always put others first, offering support and assistance whenever needed, and took great pride

in taking care of those around her. Whether volunteering or helping family and friends in times of

need, Betty’s kindness and generosity were unmatched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Sibbie (Perkins) Stines; daughters, Debra

Lynn Begley and Rosala Jean Upton; grandchildren, Justin Upton, Steven Begley, and Kevin

Begley; siblings, Joe Stines, Armond Stines, LC Stines, Lavada Vorman; as well as several

nieces and nephews.

Betty is survived by her children, Elaine Upton, Donald Upton, and Betty Jo (Dan) Haney;

grandchildren, Deanna (Mike) Wright, Dor’e (Michelle) Kutsogianis, Danielle (Tom) Zablocki,

Seresa (David) Gibson, Antonio (Alysha) Dinatale, Barry Jr. (Phetema) Ray, Chris (Aimee)

Haney, Ashley (Ryan) Gregory, Robert (Liz) Warren, Casara Begley, Andrew Haney, Brian

(Elizabeth) Warren, Donald Upton Jr.; 33 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; and

siblings, Minnie (Earl) Pendly, James (Kathy) Stines, and Alton Stines, along with many nieces,

nephews, and friends who will miss her deeply.

Betty’s love for her family and her faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be

remembered for her boundless love, her tireless work ethic, and her genuine kindness. She

leaves behind a legacy of service, faith, and love that will live on in the hearts of her family and

community.
