Pastor Jim died peacefully on Easter Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2013, surrounded by his family. From 1976-1992, Pastor Jim had been a Protestant chaplain at the Lakeside Veterans Administration Hospital in downtown Chicago. After he retired, he became an Associate Pastor at Meadows Baptist Church for many years. He taught a well-attended Sunday School class and was a deeply respected, yet modest man of faith for the congregants of all ages. He was born in Wausau, WI, on May 21, 1925 to the late George O. and Emma Schubring (nee Effa). He enlisted in the Navy after declining an offer from his local congressman to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He was stationed at naval air force bases in Florida where he served as an instructor and mechanic on Link flight simulators and aircraft such as the Chance Vought F4U Corsair. After his discharge in 1946, he began his education at Bethel College in St. Paul, MN. He graduated with a degree in Sociology. Later, he enrolled in Bethel's Seminary where he graduated with his Master of Divinity degree in 1953. In 1948, while attending a Sunday evening service at Addison Street Baptist Church in Chicago, he met LaVerne Johnson whom he would later marry on June 17, 1950. His first full-time pulpit was in Green Bay, WI, where he served as founding pastor. In 1955, the Schubrings moved to Evanston, IL where he pastored Calvary Baptist Church. In 1959, they moved to Slayton, MN, and served Lake Sarah Baptist Church until 1966. They relocated to Duluth, MN and served Emmanuel Baptist Church until 1971. Then, they moved to Ft. Dodge, IA and pastored Calvary Baptist Church until relocating back to the Chicago area in 1975. He served First Baptist Church in Norridge (IL) until he began his full-time chaplaincy with the Veterans Administration. Survivors include his wife, three children: Nancy (Dr. Steven) Brewer, Brad (Ginny), and Dan; grandchildren Jen (Todd) McCoy, Jeff (Nikki) Brewer, Heather (Jared) Johnson, Heidi (Matt) Slove, Joe, and Laura Schubring; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, George, and a sister, Virginia Oolman. He is predeceased by an infant son, Mark, and his parents. Instead of floral gifts, the Schubring family would deeply appreciate your financial contribution to a meaningful Christian-based organization, or, to Friendship Senior Service Foundation, C/o Friendship Village, 350 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194. Arrangements entrusted to Lakeshore Funerals and Sax-Tiedemann Funeral Home, Franklin Park. 847-678-1950
