Melanie Florence Dobro (nee Kurkowski) was born in Chicago on May 4, 1918, and raised in the old Polish neighborhood. Melanie was married thirty-five years to Alex Dobro before their divorce. He preceded her in death. She lived a long and loving life, survived by her loving children Bonita and Robert, Jennifer (Robert's fiancée), grandson Patrick, nephew Burton and family, niece Barbara, nephew Michael and family, nephew Patrick, niece Kerri and family, and niece Kelly and family. She is also survived by her nephews John, Dean, Barry, and Jim and their families.
Melanie joined our Lord on October 12, 2015. Her older sister Genevieve preceded her to Our Lord.
During her early years she attended Roman Catholic services and later in life she attended the Unity Church of Oak Park. Melanie was a very spiritual person who had many interests. She especially loved her geraniums, Rose of Sharon bushes, and all flowering and green plants. She also loved vacationing on the beaches of Florida.
She graduated from Austin High school with honors and went to work at Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith. When her children were born she stayed home with them. When they had matured, she went back to work at Wilson Sporting Goods and then later at Harris Bank in the safety deposit box department, from which she retired at the age of 91.
Her home in Melrose Park was always open and welcoming, where she and her Springer Spaniel Alfie, would entertain her daughter's dates as they waited. She was an active member of the Winston Park Woman's Club and Cub Scouts. She was a gracious and loving woman, who was always well dressed. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and sharing meals together. Holidays were always very special in her home.
After her children went out into the world she moved to Bloomingdale. Melanie remained there and lived independently for the rest of her life, driving herself around until the last year of her life.
