Stanislaw A. (Stanley) Domoradzki, 84, formerly of Chicago, IL and Akeley, MN died in Midland, MI on April 12, 2012 with his family at his side at the MidMichigan Medical Center. Born November 11, 1927 in Konczyce Poland to Andrzej and Karolina (Golabek), he was forced to leave his parents and family at 14 years of age.
When the World War II effort drained Germany of manpower, Stan was one of thousands of Polish boys taken from their families and marched at gunpoint into trains that took them to labor in the Nazis' fields and factories. These painful memories were captured in a book that Stan published in 1999 entitled, "The Bridge Over the Main". Later during the war, Stan was a civilian in the US Army and informed allies of German military locations. After the war, in 1949, he immigrated to the US, arriving in New York on a B29 bomber. He farmed on Long Island and shortly after settled in Chicago and married Olympia Dominiak in 1950. Stan was proud of becoming a US citizen, his patent in 1962 for an adjustable package cart, and the book he authored. He never forgot seeing Pope John Paul II in Chicago. Stan held numerous positions with the railroad and retired from Amtrak after 33.5 years in 1990. After taking care of his wife, who died of cancer, he moved to Minnesota and built a home on a lake near Walker, MN. After 2003, he stayed in Midland, Michigan with family and compassionate caregivers.
He will be remembered for being a devoted husband and loving father with bright blue eyes and a beautiful smile. Stan the Man enjoyed family gatherings, dancing, music, and parties. Every summer he took his family on vacations and every day to the beach on Lake Michigan. His favorite pastime was gardening: his vegetable garden overflowed with produce and his flower garden was immaculate. He also loved to cook, play chess and card games. Stan was courageous, strong, independent, and spoke his mind. His grandchildren remember him as having a zest for life and energizing those around him. He was adventurous, seeking out different experiences and taking others along for the ride.
Stan is survived by his sisters, Karolina Niedzialek and Katarzyna Zagula of Poland; by his daughter, Jeanne Domoradzki and husband Edward Valenzuela; sons, Allan (Marie) Domoradzki of Burnsville, MN; James of Waconia, MN; and Adrian (Carolyn) of Northlake, IL; grandchildren, Vanessa, Diana, Alaina, Jennifer, Katlin, Matthew (Amber), Sarah, Danielle, Rachel and Andrew; and great-grandchild, Chase. Stan was predeceased by his parents; wife, Olympia; and brother and sisters, Jozef, Julia Chlechowicz, Anna Rogala, and Zofia Kozak.
